ECHO NYMPH

For the 1911 ballet Narcisse, based on Ovid’s poem, Bakst created a dreamy, watery costume for Echo the nymph who falls obsessively in love with (and is rejected by) Narcissus who instead, falls in love with his own reflection.

Moody and sensual, the Echo Nymph design conjures up the colours of the lake at night with shades of Silver Cloud and Midnight Waterlily in shimmering, pure sateen cotton. A lace-like pattern of textured embroidery trails the perimeter of the pillowcases, like droplets of enchanted water. Echoing the soulful rhythm of falling asleep…
